Objectives: Introduction / Trauma Principles / Open Fractures

At the end of the educational program, the learner should attain a greater understanding of:

  1. Describe the basic concepts of initial patient evaluation and emergency triage.
  2. Recall the purpose of trauma systems
  3. Adequately identify the ATLS Primary and Secondary Survey steps
  4. Accurately triage trauma patients based on clinical scenarios
  5. Identify general roles for internal fixation vs. external fixation in the trauma patient.
  6. Identify closed vs. open fractures of the lower extremity.
  7. Classify open fractures of the lower extremity, and execute evidenced based treatment strategies including imaging, wound care, tetanus prophylaxis and appropriate surgical and antibiotic prophylaxis

Objectives: Acute Tendon Trauma

At the end of the educational program, the learner should attain a greater understanding of:

  1. Describe the anatomy of the Achilles, tibialis posterior, tibialis anterior, and peroneal tendons in regards to function, and traumatic injuries.
  2. Describe the normal phases of tendon healing, and explain how local and systemic factors may augment the healing process.
  3. Identify the basic subjective and objective findings consistent with acute tendon trauma of the lower extremity.
  4. Accurately order and interpret imaging modalities when evaluating acute tendon injuries of the lower extremity.
  5. Describe the appropriate conservative and surgical treatment strategies regarding acute tendon trauma of the lower extremity.

Objectives: Forefoot Trauma (Digital, MPJs, Metatarsals)

At the end of the educational program, the learner should attain a greater understanding of:

  1. Identify common mechanisms and configurations of digital and metatarsal fractures.
  2. Accurately select appropriate closed and open reduction techniques of digital and metatarsal fractures.
  3. Describe common metatarsal fracture types including neck, diaphyseal, and base fractures; as well as joint dislocations, intra-articular fractures and avulsion fractures.
  4. Recognize the pathology associated with 5th metatarsal base fractures and accurately classify those with common classification schemes.
  5. Describe the anatomy of the fifth metatarsal and recognize the inherent complications of the Jones Fracture.

Objectives: Midfoot Trauma (Lisfranc’s Fracture/Dislocation)

At the end of the educational program, the learner should attain a greater understanding of:

  1. Recognize the unique anatomy of the Lisfranc’s Joint complex and the inherent weakness and strength of the joint.v
  2. Accurately identify both clinical findings and radiological findings of both overt and subtle Lisfranc’s injuries.
  3. Classify Lisfranc’s injuries utilizing modern classification schemes.v
  4. Describe the advantages and disadvantages of closed versus open reduction in Lisfranc’s fracture/dislocations.v
  5. Understand the modern medical literature regarding ORIF vs. Arthrodesis of Lisfranc’s fracture/dislocations.
  6. Understand common long-term complications of Lisfranc’s fracture/dislocations.

Objectives: Rearfoot/Ankle Trauma (Calcaneal Fractures)

At the end of the educational program, the learner should attain a greater understanding of:

  1. Discuss common mechanisms of injury associated with calcaneal fractures and describe the most common classification schemes and incidence of associated injuries.
  2. Describe the most useful imaging modalities to ensure appropriate management.
  3. Evaluate common radiographic angles, such as Gissane’s and Bohler’s angle, and explain the implications of the normal and abnormal values of each.
  4. Describe and select appropriate conservative and surgical treatment options of intra- and extra-articular calcaneal fractures.
  5. Describe the common classifications of Rowe, Essex-Lopresti, and Saunders.
  6. Identify contra-indications to surgical intervention, including advantages and disadvantages of internal and external fixation, in reference to the timing of surgical intervention.
  7. Discuss common long-term pathology associated with calcaneal trauma.

Objectives: Rearfoot/Ankle Trauma (Talar Fractures)

At the end of the educational program, the learner should attain a greater understanding of:

  1. Describe normal talar anatomy, including vascular supply.
  2. Describe the pathophysiology of talar aseptic necrosis and explain clinical and imaging characteristics to aide in the diagnosis and treatment.
  3. Evaluate controllable and uncontrollable factors that can influence the normal bone healing process.
  4. Describe the Hawkin’s talar fracture classification and the sequelae of these injuries.
  5. Describe and select appropriate surgical and conservative treatment options of various talar fractures.
  6. Discuss the Berndt-Harty classification with mechanism and long-term sequelae of osteochondral lesions and talar fractures.

Objectives: Rearfoot/Ankle Trauma (Ankle / Pilon Fractures)

At the end of the educational program, the learner should attain a greater understanding of:

  1. Explain the AO, Lauge-Hansen and Denis Weber ankle fracture classification schemes.
  2. Describe advantages and possible disadvantages of conservative and surgical treatment options for ankle fracture types.
  3. Recognize and categorize different ankle fracture types, using imaging modalities.
  4. Describe basic principles of appropriate internal and external fixation.
  5. Describe the common short-term and long-term complications associated with trauma and fracture of the ankle.

About the speaker

Dr. Jordan Grossman earned his podiatric medical degree from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio, followed by a podiatric surgical residency at the Podiatry Hospital of Pittsburghand fellowships at The Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh and at The University of Ulm, Germany. Dr. Grossman is board certified in both foot surgery and reconstructive rearfoot and ankle surgery by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery. He serves as faculty for the Orthopaedic Residency Program at Akron General Medical Center and the Podiatric Surgical Residency Program at Kaiser Permanente/Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Grossman also serves as a clinical assistant professor of podiatry in orthopaedic surgery at Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine and is Chief, Section of Podiatry at Akron General Medical Center and St. Thomas Hospital/Summa Health System.

His areas of special interest are skin and nail fungal infections, pedal melanoma, soft tissue masses, pedal dermatitis, longitudinal melanonychia, and podiatric dermatological risk management.

Dr. Mark Hardy received his medical degree at Kent State University and completed his residency at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Hardy is board certified by the American Board of Foot & Ankle Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. He is the program director of the Mercy Health Foot & Ankle Residency, Professor and Division Head of Surgery at Kent State University and a partner at Balance Foot and Ankle Wellness Center in Lakewood, Ohio.
